In every sense, it is meant for driving enthusiasts – old and young alike - offering an extraordinary combination of performance, quality, heritage and value. Now in its last year of existence, the 350Z roadster holds its head high as a true sports car that enchanted many a people over several decades.

A quintessential favorite of sport car fans, the 350Z roadster is a legend for high-performance excitement and a dynamic driving experience. And the 2009 Nissan 350Z attracts attention with its stylish design, easy-to-operate convertible top design, powerful V6 engine and responsive chassis and brakes wherever it goes.

Available in 3 trims - Enthusiast, Touring, and Grand Touring and mainly a carryover from 2008, the 2009 Nissan 350Z comes with a strong V6 engine, capable handling and braking, excellent value, and enduring styling. The Touring trim gets the Bose audio system with MP3 CD capability and leather-appointed heated power seats. The Grand Touring, the ultimate 350Z Roadster, includes all the Touring equipment, Brembo braking system, and Vehicle Dynamic Control.

The 350Z derives power from a 3.5 liter V6 engine good for the power of 306 horses mated to an efficient six-speed manual or a five-speed auto transmission. Its fuel economy figures stand at 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined. Though an old model, the 2009 Nissan 350Z delivers the performance that is equal to that of some of the best sports cars available today. It offers an excellent outright grip and balance on a highly curvy road and the steering is quick and well-weighted. Unmatchable power delivery is particularly enchanting at higher revs.

Nissan’s advanced air bag system (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant-classification sensors; driver and passenger seat mounted side-impact supplemental air bags; traction control system (TCS); vehicle dynamic control (VDC); seat belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters; tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS); Nissan’s vehicle immobilizer system; vehicle security system; and a 3-point ALR/ELR passenger seat belt system are among the standard safety and security equipment on the 2009 Nissan 350Z.

The 2009 Audi A4 delivers more power, improved fuel economy, adds the unique Quattro all-wheel-drive and witnesses several changes in exterior styling. Its competitors in this segment include BMW 3 Series and the Acura TSX.

Power and Performance

The same engines equipped inside the convertible deliver 200 horsepower and 255 horses, respectively. Sedans and wagons come with Audi’s standard Quattro AWD system and a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The 2.0 T convertible is available with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission or Quattro AWD and a six-speed automatic.

Build and Styling

Comfort is assured in all the elements of the A4’s interiors, be it the choice of the systems or space. Elegant and sporty textured aluminum decorative inlays extend across the dash and doors speaking volumes of the craftsmanship and quality of materials used in the A4’s cabin. The A4 2.0T sedan and wagon get power driver seat; front fog lights; dual-zone automatic climate control; heated and power adjustable exterior mirrors; 10-speaker six-CD/MP3 changer audio system and a glass sunroof. Inner furnishings include leather upholstery, air-conditioning; four-spoke leather steering wheel with multi-function control; power front-passenger seat and heated front seats. Luggage capacity of the A4 sedan is 16.9 cubic feet.

At National Highway Transportation Safety Administration tests, the A4 rated four stars for frontal crash tests, while it got the highest possible score of five stars in side impact testing for front occupants, and four stars for rear-seat passenger safety. It also earned another highest possible rating, “Good” for frontal offset, side-impact, and head restraint effectiveness tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The tagline of the 2009 BMW 6 Series reads “Live vicariously through no one”. True. With sleek, modern style, the 6 Series is replete in head-turning beauty and, of course, incredible BMW performance. The 2009 BMW 6 Series comes in 650i coupe and 650i convertible, featuring sporty looks, well-appointed interiors and top-notch safety. It combines out-of-the world performance, precise handling, and arrow-like stability. The light body weight and ample power help the 6 Series cars for brisk acceleration from any speed.

Power and Performance

Both the Coupe and Convertible are powered by a standard 4.8-liter V-8 engine good for 360 horsepower and 350 lb-ft torque at 3400-3800 rpm. The balanced and virtually unrivaled performance it delivers is achieved through ultra-precise engineering and advanced technologies. The 6 Series achieves 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, employing the latest technology in to generate a wide band of power. A six-speed Sequential Manual Transmission (SMT) is standard on 650i coupe and 650i convertible trims with overdrive.

A six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is available as an optional feature. BMW’s active steering accelerates low-speed steering response and paves way for maximum maneuverability particularly on the highway.

The 650i coupe is large and a blend of modest weight and raw power, leading way for quick acceleration at any speed. When pushed hard, it comes on top though it is not quite as nimble as the smaller 3 Series’ coupe. The coupe holds the round corners tightly due to the active roll stabilization and the lightweight suspension balances the traction and eases the ride.

Body and Styling

Fitted with the latest technology, the ‘6’ is a true BMW and a benchmark for precision, performance and drop-dead looks. It sports a sculpted profile. The clean lines look rich and are of vibrant quality. The available two trims – coupe and the convertible – provide a unique blend of luxury, sporty performance and comfort.

The 6 Series has a luxurious cockpit, wood trimmings, adaptive headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium leather upholstery, Bluetooth interface, and a DVD-based GPS navigation system. It comes with BMW’s iDrive control, which takes some time getting used to. Last but not the least, the 6 Series has a scope for lots of customization.

Safety Features

The 6 Series comes with a lot of standard safety features. The Anti-lock brakes; traction and anti-skid control; BMW’s active roll stabilization; and BMW’s dynamic drive control are standard across models. The coupe gets added head protection with tubular side air bags while front side air bags and front knee air bags are standard.

Read Story | Posted in New Car Performance, New Car Reviews | No Comments »

The 2009 Chrysler Sebring is a midsize four-door, five-passenger family sedan, available in Base LX, Limited and Touring trims. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes are standard now. Stability control is standard on all trims except the Base LX.

The 2009 Grand Caravan is an ace four-door seven-passenger Dodge minivan available in SE, SXT and CV trims. The Base SE gets Stow ‘n Go seating as standard equipment and the upscale SXT gains some new optional features for 2009.

The Grand Caravan is known for its loads of innovative and family-friendly features. It takes on many competitors like the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Kia Sedona/Hyundai Entourage and several full-size crossovers like the Chevrolet Traverse.

The Grand Caravan has many innovative interior features. The most noteworthy are the various second-row seating choices: the standard Stow ‘n Go features a pair of captain’s chairs disappear into the floor (as the third row does) creating a perfectly flat load floor for up to 140 cubic feet of cargo room. The other innovative features are the two rear video screens (one that swivels), Sirius Satellite TV, ambient cabin lighting, a power-folding third row, huge under-floor storage, a pop-out cargo-area-mounted flashlight and a driver-seat umbrella holder.

Engine and Performance

The Base SE trim is equipped with a 3.3-liter V6 engine rated at 175 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic is standard. It delivers 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined which is actually disappointing.

With a 3.8-liter V6 that pumps out197 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission, the SXT delivers 16 city/23 hwy. A 4.0-liter V6 engine making 251 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque is optional on this model.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) designed to assist drivers in maintaining control of their vehicles during extreme steering maneuvers is a standard feature. The ESP senses when a vehicle is starting to spin (oversteer) or plow (understeer), and attempts to correct the vehicle’s course by automatically controlling the throttle and applying the brakes at individual wheels. All trims are front-wheel driven.

Body and Styling

The 2009 Grand Caravan leads it class with innovative rear seating options, loads of space, powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine, better safety scores and kid-friendly entertainment options. 16-inch wheels are standard, while 17-inch alloy rims are optional. Compact spare tire is standard.

The appropriately clean and utilitarian interior comes with leather-trimmed bucket seats, cloth low-back bucket seats with stain repel, eight-way power driver and front-passenger seats, manually-adjustable seats, LATCH-ready child seat anchor system, second row buckets with fold-in-floor seats, second and third-row Stow ‘n Go with third-row tail gate seats, commercial seat delete, AM/FM radio with CD and MP3 players, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, four speakers, uconnect studios-SIRIUS satellite radio, six speakers, and air conditioning with three-zone temperature control. More storage nooks, pockets and bins are sprinkled in the interiors of the 2009 Dodge Caravan.

Safety Features

Antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, and full-length side curtain airbags, a rearview camera and a sonar ParkSense audible system.

The Parkview rear backup camera displays a wide-angle view of the area immediately behind the vehicle to assist the driver when backing up. The rear image is automatically displayed on the navigation screen when the transmission is shifted into reverse.

The available ParkSense rear park assist system uses sound waves to detect nearby obstacles in and near the rear path of the vehicle to help maneuver in tight spaces at parking speeds. Audio-visual indicators in the overhead display in the rear of the vehicle alert to the proximity of larger, stationary objects that might be outside the line of sight.

The Mopar Blind Spot Monitoring System and LED indicators, located on the outside mirrors, provide continuous visual feedback of approaching vehicles. A precaution that offers good peace of mind, Grand Caravan’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) alerts the driver of low-pressure tires via a warning light in the instrument cluster.

Read Story | Posted in New Car Reviews | No Comments »

An attractive cabin, modern luxury features, and a suspension that’s supple enough for the daily commute – all rolled into one complete package – the 2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan. The G37 is further enhanced for 2009 by a new seven-speed automatic transmission which promises slightly better fuel economy and acceleration than last year’s five-speed.

The 2009 Infiniti G37 is a sport-focused Sedan available in four trims: base, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT, and G37x AWD. Combined with a powerful engine, stylish look, and unique comfort, the new 2009 G37 Sedan stands out among other mid-size sedans in its segment.

Car and Driver magazine has named the Infiniti G37 to its 10Best list for 2009. Out of a field of 56 vehicles, the G Coupe and G Sedan rose to the top, marking the fourth time Infiniti has won this award, in addition to 2003, 2004 and 2007. The G37 has also been named one of Cars.com’s 2009 Best Bet for Luxury Vehicles.

Powerful engine and efficient transmission

The G37 Sedan derives power from a robust 3.7-liter V6, double overhead cam (DOHC), 4 valves per cylinder engine that pumps out a massive 328 hp at 7,000 rpm and 269 lb-ft at 5,200 rpm. Its continuously variable valve timing control system (CVTCS) optimizes opening of intake and exhaust valves of the engine.

It is mated to a standard electronically controlled 7-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control (ASC), which offers selectable manual gearshifts and Downshift Rev Matching (DRM). A 6-speed manual with short-throw shifter transmission is standard for the G37S Sport 6MT trim. The EPA estimated fuel economy is in the range of 18 mpg in city and 25 mpg on highways.

Elegant exterior and intriguing interior

The elegant exterior is the striking feature of the 2009 G37 Sedan. High intensity discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights, scratch shield paint, and dual chrome exhaust finishers offer a stylish look to the Sedan. For 2009, G37 Sedan rear-wheel drive is standard for all trims other than G37x AWD which is equipped with standard all-wheel drive configuration.

In addition, the new 2009 G37 Sedan offers a host of standard features such as dual zone automatic temperature control system with micro-filtration; 8-way power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support; washi-finish aluminum interior trim; six-speaker audio system with AM/FM/CD and MP3 playback capability; radio data system (RDS); auxiliary audio input jack; and XM® satellite radio. An 8-way power front-passenger seat is standard on all trims except the G37 base. The 2009 G37 Sedan comes with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels for all trims except the G37S Sport 6MT that rides on standard 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels.

Salient safety features

The 2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan is equipped with many advanced safety features. Driver, front, and outboard rear passengers side impact air bags; front-seat active head restraints (AHR); electronic brake force distribution (EBD); brake assist (BA); 4-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS); vehicle dynamic control (VDC); traction control system (TCS); cruise control with steering wheel-mounted switches; and tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) are few of the numerous standard safety features on the G37 Sedan for 2009.

Read Story | Posted in New Car Performance, New Car Reviews | No Comments »

With the Lexus IS-F, Lexus made its entry into the sports car segment. 2008 was the year in which this model finally landed, ending a long period of speculation about whether Lexus was capable of such a car, given that its niche market is the luxury car.

We are told the F in the name stands for ‘Formula’; so, this should serve notice that Lexus means business. It has a long list of cars such as Acura TL Type-S; Audi RS4 and the BMW M3 to out-race, but one thing is certain –it is here to stay.

Into only its second year, the IS-F does not carry too many changes. One gets a two-tone interior and a new instrument cluster for this year. These are the only noticeable changes; there are dozens of little tweaking here and there.

A package, in which a navigation system and a Mark Levinson Premium Audio system are provided, is offered as an option.

Engine and performance

The engine is a solid, extremely powerful 5.0-liter V8 that pumps out as many as 416 horses and 371 lb ft of torque. The acceleration is one of its major points. It can shoot to 60 mph in less than 4.9 seconds. To complement this power, the IS F features an eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift transmission, a first from Lexus, and a two-stage intake system.

Monotube gas-pressure shock absorbers and stabilizer bars are given for enhanced suspension. Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), a system which integrates braking, steering, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC), is given to help minimize loss of traction during a turn. Brembo®, a special brake system is given.

Body and Styling

Sculpted fenders; adaptive front lighting system; Bi-Xenon™ HID Headlamps; BBS® 19-inch forged aluminum, 10-spoke wheels and a low-restriction exhaust system are some of the important exterior features of the 2009 Lexus IS-F.

Optional features include dynamic radar cruise control and intuitive parking assist.

The major interior features of the 2009 Lexus IS-F are bolstered leather-trimmed sport seats with distinctive “F” styling; distinguishing aluminized console and doors; Bluetooth and blue LED indicator needles.

A Mark Levinson Premium Surround Audio system and a navigation system that can recognize more than 100 distinct vices are some of the optional features.

Safety Features

A reinforced body that protects passengers better; a network of advanced airbags; direct tire pressure monitor; a theft-deterrent system; three-point seatbelts; daytime running lights and anti-lock braking system with Brake Assist are some of the standard safety features of this model.

A pre-collision system, which increases brake force when a collision is unavoidable, is one of the optional safety features.

Read Story | Posted in New Car Performance, New Car Reviews | No Comments »

The 2009 Kia Borrego is a new midsize SUV that brings power, luxury and sophistication to ever-expanding Kia lineup. It is available with a strong V8 engine and six-speed transmission for the first time in a Kia vehicle.
The Borrego made global debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Kia says Borrego is one of the first production offerings based off of the new design direction Kia continues to unveil through concept vehicles including the Kue, KND-4, Kee and KOUP. It presents a straightforward and clean look intended for those who enjoy an active yet uncomplicated lifestyle.

Power and performance

The new Borrego is powered by a DOHC, all-aluminum 3.8-liter V6 as well as Kia’s first-ever DOHC 4.6-liter V8 engine, also all-aluminum engine which are more powerful than any in Kia car to date. The V6 pumps out a competitive 276 horsepower at 6,000 rpm with 267 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm, the all-new V8 is rated at a class-leading 337 horsepower at 6,000 rpm with 323 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. By the merit of its power, the Borrego is more powerful than the Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee and GMC Acadia. The 2WD or 4WD Borrego runs on regular unleaded fuel compared to the Pathfinder, which requires premium unleaded.

With class-leading towing of 7,500 pounds when partnered to the V8, and 5,000 pounds with the V6, the new midsize SUV offers unmatched capabilities for a weekend of camping or outdoor lifestyle activities. A new six-speed automatic transmission mated to the V8 engine and with this it achieve best-in-class fuel economy for an engine of its kind with an EPA rating of 15/22 city/highway for the V8 with 2WD and 15/20 city/highway for the 4WD – perfect for families on the go as well as for long road trips. When the V6 is under the hood, Borrego is able to achieve competitive fuel economy of 17/21 city/highway (2WD) and 16/21 city/highway (4WD).

Exterior and interior

The Borrego features an aggressive, wide stance indicating stability and strength with flared back headlamps, an upright grille and chiseled hood exude a strong presence. The contemporary front and rear fascias reveal a new face of luxury and the swift rolling on optional 18-inch alloy wheels let the enjoyment of an energetic life both in city cruise and highway travel.

The space in the Kia Borrego is quite large enough to accommodate as many as seven passengers. It also offers decent headroom, driver’s knee airbag and legroom besides a vast cargo area. The perforated leather seats with single-stitch tailoring throughout sets the scene, which leads into the leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant controls. Three rows of seating are standard for a capacity of seven passengers. The sliding second-row seat allows easier access to the third row, and both the second and third rows fold flat for optimized cargo space.

Safety Features

Kia puts a lot of emphasis on safety, offering six standard airbags, electronic stability and traction control, ABS and brake assist across the line. It also offers downhill assist control (DAC) and hill assist control (HAC), which help maintain stability on steep slopes.

Read Story | Posted in New Car Performance, New Car Reviews | No Comments »

Clapton & Daltrey - what a show!

If you missed Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey at the New Orleans Arena Saturday night, well, you missed it! These two legendary rockers demonstrated that Classic Rock is aptly named.

Daltrey, who turned 66 last Monday, appeared to thoroughly enjoy himself on stage. His voice was strong and clear. His 50-minute set included Who standards like I Can See For Miles, The Real Me, Who Are You, and Baba O'Riley. Surprisingly, fellow Who band-mate Simon Townshend played rhythm guitar with Daltrey's band, and even stepped out front to sing lead on Goin' Mobile.

Clapton, who'll hit 65 at the end of the month, was...well...he was Clapton. What more can one say? He glided through guitar riffs like nobody's business, cruising through an hour and a half of Clapton and Cream favorites too numerous to mention. I have no doubt that the wanna-be guitar players in the audience were either inspired to continue to greatness or to quit in frustration.

And what could be better, after a great concert, than a trip to the Tiffin Inn for a mushroom omelet and a short stack of pancakes! Even the weather cooperated. What a great night!

Why don't children play outside all day anymore? In an era of video games and the Internet, outdoor activities are a rarer and rarer part of children's lives.

In an effort to reverse the negative effects of this growing disconnect, BREC's Bluebonnet Swamp and Nature Center (BSNC) will host Rockin' at the Swamp on Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the BSNC, 10503 N. Oak Hills Pkwy.

This day-long event focuses on BSNC's initiative to increase children's appreciation for nature and the outdoors through fun activities and learning opportunities about earth science, geology, mineralogy and gemology.

BSNC's director Claire Coco says experience is the ultimate teacher. "Holding an insect in your hand or studying the parts of a plant at the swamp is certainly different than just reading about it. Children make emotional and intellectual investments in things they can touch, see and smell."

Rockin' at the Swamp activities will illustrate a range of ways that adults can nurture children's love for the natural world, even if they live in a densely-populated place like Baton Rouge.

Experienced fossil hunters and rock enthusiasts alike will have the opportunity to enjoy the trails while making their own gemstone identification card; collecting and learning about pyrite specimens; and starting or continuing a gemstone collection. In addition, hobbyists and gem-mining vendors will provide collection displays of rough and polished mineral specimens and fossils. Other thematic elements will include a "Paint a Rock Pyton" station by Jim Stone, Co., rock films, as well as a rock climbing wall. Eagle 98.1 is providing music for the event.

Turned off by both diets and tasteless foods, Holly's mission is to give cooks the ability to put a delicious, healthier meal on the table in a time-friendly manner.

As Holly adds cookbooks to her trim&TERRIFIC series, her "never sacrifice taste" philosophy remains intact. Her message is simple: food that is good for you can be delicious and easy to prepare. Holly's reputation for her healthier approach continually garners national media coverage. Holly has made her fast, flavorful and healthy meals on network television shows including and Fox & Friends, NBC Weekend Today Show, The 700 Club, and D-Life on CNBC as well as major local markets nationwide. She writes for national food magazines and Internet food sites. As well as a keynote speaker, Holly also serves as the national spokeswoman for Louisiana Sweet Potatoes and has done media spokesperson work for diet Coke, Pace Salsa/Campbell's Soup, Nature Sweet Tomatoes, and Salmon of the Americas. Holly was featured in a national Teflon/DuPont nonstick ad campaign with her Trim & Terrific recipes in full page ads in national magazines including People, Self, Real Simple, Ladies Home Journal, Bon Appetit, USA Today, plus many more.

A wife and mother first, Holly understands the challenges of the busy person. Her personal experience of running a household of five inspired the subject matter for each of the trim&TERRIFIC books. Her recipes require familiar ingredients and include easy-to-follow instructions and quick tips; this combination is the main focus of her trim&TERRIFIC series.

Holly personally tests all of her recipes in her home and as a result, has three avid cooks. "Children love to cook, and if you include them, you can make positive, lasting impressions," Holly said. Based on her experience, Holly included a Kid's In The Kitchen Chapter filled with fun, delicious recipes in The New Holly Clegg trim&TERRIFIC Cookbook and has the newly released KIDS COOKING for Mommies. If you're wondering if you can really make a healthy impression on kids, Holly has proof. "My youngest child did not have a fast food hamburger until she was 15 years old, and it wasn't because I didn't allow it.

It's no secret that I love LSU Baseball. Don't get me wrong - I'm a fan of Tiger Football and Basketball, and of course, I love dem Saints. But give me a Sunday afternoon at The Box, and I happier than a little bit!

Such was the situation this past Sunday. My wife and I had tickets to the 3rd game of the season-opening 3-game series with Centenary. It was cloudy, but the rain held off and the temperature was in the mid-60s. In fact, this is the first early-season game we'd been to in several years that we didn't have to wear winter parkas to The Box.

LSU won, 4-0, wihich was great, but that was hardly the point. For 2 hours and 15 minutes (it was a fast game, to be sure!) the harshest winter in memory was over, and spring was here. The field in front of me was a crisp green, and the stands crackled with purple and gold. By the end of the first inning, my lap was littered with peanut shells and pretzel salt.

What could be better, other than a Blake Dean home run over the center field wall?

Spring is here. Certainly not because the calendar says so. But because LSU Baseball is back. Be sure to follow the Tigers all season long on Eagle 98.1.

I'm happy to say that my band, GEARED UP, will be playing at the legendary Phil Brady's on Government Street on Saturday night, Feb. 27. We've been rehearsing a whole slew of new classic rock songs, including some by Badfinger, John Mellencamp, Eddie Money, the Stones, and a great medley of Kinks songs.

Phil Brady's has been a major player in Baton Rouge's Blues and Rock scene for as long as anyone can remember. I'm proud to say this will be the fourth time GEARED UP will have played at Phil Brady's.

For more on GEARED UP, drop by our web site at www.gearedupband.com. See you there!

Who rocks the Super Bowl?

The stars of the Super Bowl, of course, were our beloved New Orleans Saints. Except at half-time, when The Who took center stage with an amazing display of sound and light.

I didn't particularly care for the abbreviated versions of Pinball Wizard or See Me Feel Me, but I was willing to concede to their inclusion in the program. The rest of the show was pure vintage Who: vibrant, vital, and every bit as rockin' as it was 40 (yes, FORTY) years ago.

As for the light and pyro show, I have 2 words: SPEC TACULAR! And kudos to the producers for NOT having 10,000 young people littering the field in a choreographed display of idiocy.

Roger Daltrey, who turns 66 next month, gave what I thought to be a stellar performance. His voice was clear and strong; perhaps not as powerful as it was 20 years ago, but come on! At 64, his counterpart, Pete Townshend, can still shred as well as anyone.

Zak Starkey sparkled behind his clear drum kit. I absolutely LOVED his new red-white-and-blue "bullseye" cymbals, no doubt a nod to the colorful t-shirt worn by Keith Moon in The Who's mod days in the 60's. Pino Paladino, the newest member of The Who, has had enormous boots to fill since the passing of John Entwistle, but managed to fill in the bottom end nicely. He reminds me of Entwistle, too - tall, quiet, stoic, business-like.

Most people don't realize that The Who have been a 6-man band for quite a while. Rabbit Bundrick has toured with The Who as their keyboardist for over 20 years, while Pete's younger brother, Simon, has added backing guitar and vocals for nearly 10. Both of them add greatly to The Who's sound.

The Who refuse to go away. Thank God.

Kudos to everyone in New Orleans, from the smallest shop owners to the biggest politicians, for standing up to the NFL about using "Who Dat" on t-shirts and other merchandise.

The NFL has backed down, or at least qualified their position: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/new-orleans-saints-nfl-who-dat-020110?gt1=39002

Last week, every single sports pundit on every single radio and TV show said the same thing: moving the Pro Bowl to the week before the Super Bowl was a mistake. After all, they all said, there are 14 players from the Saints and Colts who won't even be able to play!

And yet what happened? Sunday's Pro Bowl got the highest TV ratings of any Pro Bowl in the last 10 years!

What can we learn from this?

I hear there are people in New Orleans who are actually angry because former Saints great Archie Manning is rooting for his son, Peyton, to win the Super Bowl for the Colts.

What's the matter with you people?!!

Of course he's going to root for his son! If you fail to understand why a man chooses his family first, then you are a bad parent, and you are what's wrong with America today.

Weeks ago I maintained that if the Saints could come off their first-round Playoff bye and beat the Cardinals, then they would go all the way and win the Super Bowl. I'm sticking with that. Admittedly, the Saints will have to play the game of their lives without a home field advantage, but I believe they can do it.

I think the key, once again, will be defense and turnovers. Watch.

Both teams have offenses that can put up points almost at will. Therefore, the team whose defense can come up with big takeaways to put their offense back on the field will have the advantage.

And turnovers? The team that keeps the mental mistakes to zero will win this game.

That having been said, what if Indianapolis beats New Orleans? I'll be disappointed, but you know what? That's OK. Because the Saints are in the Super Bowl!

What a long, strange trip it's been.

It's no secret that I am a 1973 graduate of Penn State, so it's no surprise that I've been inundated with phone calls and e-mails asking who I'm going to root for in the upcoming bowl game between LSU and Penn State.

While it's true that I owe a great deal to Penn State (which is where I found my livelihood AND my wife!), I don't have to hesitate for a moment when I tell you that my loyalty lies with LSU. My son graduated from LSU, and my wife earned her Master's degree from LSU. In addition, I work for the Flagship Station for LSU Sports. I've been rooting for LSU for so long, I can't root for anyone else, including my Alma Mater.

I'm on or near the LSU campus several times a week, but I couldn't tell you the last time I was in Happy Valley. Come to think of it, the only thing Penn State has done for me in the last 35 years is ask me for more money.

GEAUX, TIGERS!

Things to look for in the LSU-Arkansas game:

1) LSU will honor 24 seniors before the game, and many of them played key roles on LSU's 2007 National Championship team. The Tigers will also wear special Nike uniforms for the game, which are mostly white, with "old gold" helmets that have the same design as the regular one.

2) The Tigers must shake off the dissapointment of last week and concentrate on an Arkansas team that has won four straight. Quarterback Ryan Mallett leads the league in total offense. He is a huge (6-7, 240-lbs.) and accurate. LSU hasn't gotten much of a pass rush going this year, and if they let Mallett, who is not mobile, have time to throw, look out.

3) Arkansas spreads the ball around. Four receivers, including the tight end, have 26 catches or more.

4) Razorback tailback Broderick Green is filling in for the injured Michael Smith. Green, a USC transfer, is 6-2, 248-lbs. and quite the power back. Contrary to the image Bobby Petrino and the Hogs portray, the offense is balanced, with 364 passes for the season and 340 runs.

5) The Hog defense has not been good. They are last in the league in total defense, and last in pass defense. However, Mississippi State ran for 347 yards against Arkansas in a loss last week. The Razorback's smallish defense is wearing down, and the pass defense number is largely because the teams that they have blown out had to stop running the football. In the games that were competitve, teams ran the ball successfully at Arkansas.

6) LSU senior tailback Keiland Williams is out with a broken ankle, the third Tiger tailback to be lost for the year. Stevan Ridley will assume the role of starter, with Trindon Holliday and Russell Shepard likely to see more time as well. Seeing Shepard get a bigger amount of playing time would be a welcome sight for most Tiger fans.

7) The winner of this game has the inside track to the Cotton Bowl. The loser seems headed for the Liberty Bowl.

8) Don't forget, coming in December to 104.5, ESPN radio!
