Power and Performance

A4 Sedans and wagons are available in three trim levels with the 2.0-liter turbo – base Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige. New on the 2009 Audi A4 is a pair of direct-injection engines - a 211-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder inline on all models and an optional 265-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6 on the sedan. The 2009 Grand Caravan is an ace four-door seven-passenger Dodge minivan available in SE, SXT and CV trims. The Base SE gets Stow ‘n Go seating as standard equipment and the upscale SXT gains some new optional features for 2009.

The Grand Caravan is known for its loads of innovative and family-friendly features. It takes on many competitors like the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Kia Sedona/Hyundai Entourage and several full-size crossovers like the Chevrolet Traverse.

With a 3.8-liter V6 that pumps out197 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission, the SXT delivers 16 city/23 hwy. A 4.0-liter V6 engine making 251 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque is optional on this model.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) designed to assist drivers in maintaining control of their vehicles during extreme steering maneuvers is a standard feature. The ESP senses when a vehicle is starting to spin (oversteer) or plow (understeer), and attempts to correct the vehicle’s course by automatically controlling the throttle and applying the brakes at individual wheels. All trims are front-wheel driven.

Body and Styling

The 2009 Grand Caravan leads it class with innovative rear seating options, loads of space, powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine, better safety scores and kid-friendly entertainment options. 16-inch wheels are standard, while 17-inch alloy rims are optional. Compact spare tire is standard.

2009 Lexus IS-F

With the Lexus IS-F, Lexus made its entry into the sports car segment. 2008 was the year in which this model finally landed, ending a long period of speculation about whether Lexus was capable of such a car, given that its niche market is the luxury car.

We are told the F in the name stands for ‘Formula’; so, this should serve notice that Lexus means business. It has a long list of cars such as Acura TL Type-S; Audi RS4 and the BMW M3 to out-race, but one thing is certain –it is here to stay.

Into only its second year, the IS-F does not carry too many changes. One gets a two-tone interior and a new instrument cluster for this year. These are the only noticeable changes; there are dozens of little tweaking here and there.

A package, in which a navigation system and a Mark Levinson Premium Audio system are provided, is offered as an option.

Engine and performance

The engine is a solid, extremely powerful 5.0-liter V8 that pumps out as many as 416 horses and 371 lb ft of torque. The acceleration is one of its major points. It can shoot to 60 mph in less than 4.9 seconds. To complement this power, the IS F features an eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift transmission, a first from Lexus, and a two-stage intake system.

Monotube gas-pressure shock absorbers and stabilizer bars are given for enhanced suspension. Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), a system which integrates braking, steering, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC), is given to help minimize loss of traction during a turn. Brembo®, a special brake system is given.

Sculpted fenders; adaptive front lighting system; Bi-Xenon™ HID Headlamps; BBS® 19-inch forged aluminum, 10-spoke wheels and a low-restriction exhaust system are some of the important exterior features of the 2009 Lexus IS-F.

This mid-size luxury sports sedan has everything one looks for in a vehicle of this class –luxury; space; sophistication and power. The M Series is a versatile car that is offered in 3.5-liter V6 (M35) and 4.5-liter V8 (M45) engines. These are further divided into 35x and 45x.

For this year, the M35 has got an automatic seven-speed transmission, while the 35x retains the five-speed manual. The new paint that Infiniti claims can heal minor scratches on its own is also added.

Exterior and interior

The Borrego features an aggressive, wide stance indicating stability and strength with flared back headlamps, an upright grille and chiseled hood exude a strong presence. The contemporary front and rear fascias reveal a new face of luxury and the swift rolling on optional 18-inch alloy wheels let the enjoyment of an energetic life both in city cruise and highway travel.

The space in the Kia Borrego is quite large enough to accommodate as many as seven passengers. It also offers decent headroom, driver’s knee airbag and legroom besides a vast cargo area. The perforated leather seats with single-stitch tailoring throughout sets the scene, which leads into the leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant controls. Three rows of seating are standard for a capacity of seven passengers. The sliding second-row seat allows easier access to the third row, and both the second and third rows fold flat for optimized cargo space.

Safety Features

Kia puts a lot of emphasis on safety, offering six standard airbags, electronic stability and traction control, ABS and brake assist across the line. It also offers downhill assist control (DAC) and hill assist control (HAC), which help maintain stability on steep slopes.

The 2009 Pontiac G3 is a five-door five-passenger subcompact hatchback offered in a well equipped single trim level. The G3 looks small on the outside, but provides maximum cargo space and a host of other features in its roomy cabin. Power and Performance

If you missed Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey at the New Orleans Arena Saturday night, well, you missed it! These two legendary rockers demonstrated that Classic Rock is aptly named.

Daltrey, who turned 66 last Monday, appeared to thoroughly enjoy himself on stage. His voice was strong and clear. His 50-minute set included Who standards like I Can See For Miles, The Real Me, Who Are You, and Baba O'Riley. Surprisingly, fellow Who band-mate Simon Townshend played rhythm guitar with Daltrey's band, and even stepped out front to sing lead on Goin' Mobile.

Clapton, who'll hit 65 at the end of the month, was...well...he was Clapton. What more can one say? He glided through guitar riffs like nobody's business, cruising through an hour and a half of Clapton and Cream favorites too numerous to mention. I have no doubt that the wanna-be guitar players in the audience were either inspired to continue to greatness or to quit in frustration.

And what could be better, after a great concert, than a trip to the Tiffin Inn for a mushroom omelet and a short stack of pancakes! Even the weather cooperated. What a great night!

BREC Rockin' at the Swamp

Why don't children play outside all day anymore? In an era of video games and the Internet, outdoor activities are a rarer and rarer part of children's lives.

In an effort to reverse the negative effects of this growing disconnect, BREC's Bluebonnet Swamp and Nature Center (BSNC) will host Rockin' at the Swamp on Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the BSNC, 10503 N. Oak Hills Pkwy.

This day-long event focuses on BSNC's initiative to increase children's appreciation for nature and the outdoors through fun activities and learning opportunities about earth science, geology, mineralogy and gemology.

BSNC's director Claire Coco says experience is the ultimate teacher. "Holding an insect in your hand or studying the parts of a plant at the swamp is certainly different than just reading about it. Children make emotional and intellectual investments in things they can touch, see and smell."

Rockin' at the Swamp activities will illustrate a range of ways that adults can nurture children's love for the natural world, even if they live in a densely-populated place like Baton Rouge.

Experienced fossil hunters and rock enthusiasts alike will have the opportunity to enjoy the trails while making their own gemstone identification card; collecting and learning about pyrite specimens; and starting or continuing a gemstone collection. In addition, hobbyists and gem-mining vendors will provide collection displays of rough and polished mineral specimens and fossils. Other thematic elements will include a "Paint a Rock Pyton" station by Jim Stone, Co., rock films, as well as a rock climbing wall. Eagle 98.1 is providing music for the event.

"Our goal is simple," says Coco. "We want to see the children and families of Baton Rouge once again connecting to nature through outdoor recreation while at the same time enhancing their fitness and health."

Admission is $5 for adults (18 and older), $4 for children (ages 2-17) and free for children under 2. For more information, please call 225-757-8905.

Chicken Fajita Pizza

Makes 8 servings

1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into strips

1 teaspoon chili powder

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 green bell pepper, cored, thinly sliced into strips

1 (10-ounce) can prepared pizza crust or Boboli crust

1/2 cup picante sauce

1 cup shredded reduced-fat Monterey Jack cheese

1. Preheat oven to 425˚F. Coat pizza pan with nonstick cooking spray.

2. In large skillet coated with nonstick cooking spray, sauté chicken over medium heat until done, 7-10 minutes. Stir in chili powder, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Add onion and green pepper, cooking until vegetables are tender, another 3 minutes.

3. Unroll dough, and place in prepared pan. Starting at center, press out dough with hands. Bake 6-8 minutes, or until light golden brown.

4. Remove from oven, spoon chicken mixture over partially baked crust. Spoon picante sauce over chicken, sprinkle with cheese. Return to oven, bake 10-12 minutes, or until crust is crisp.

Barbecue Shrimp

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup fat-free Italian or creamy onion dressing

1 tablespoon minced garlic

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/4 teaspoon cayenne

1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon paprika

2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves

2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves

Salt and pepper to taste

2 pounds large shrimp (not peeled)

1/3 cup light beer

1/2 cup clam juice or fat-free chicken broth

1. In large nonstick skillet, combine oil, Italian dressing, garlic, onion powder, cayenne, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, oregano, thyme, salt and pepper over medium heat until sauce begins to boil.
2. Add shrimp, cook 5 minutes. Add beer and broth, cook another 5–7 minutes or until shrimp are done.

It's no secret that I love LSU Baseball. Don't get me wrong - I'm a fan of Tiger Football and Basketball, and of course, I love dem Saints. But give me a Sunday afternoon at The Box, and I happier than a little bit!

Such was the situation this past Sunday. My wife and I had tickets to the 3rd game of the season-opening 3-game series with Centenary. It was cloudy, but the rain held off and the temperature was in the mid-60s. In fact, this is the first early-season game we'd been to in several years that we didn't have to wear winter parkas to The Box.

LSU won, 4-0, wihich was great, but that was hardly the point. For 2 hours and 15 minutes (it was a fast game, to be sure!) the harshest winter in memory was over, and spring was here. The field in front of me was a crisp green, and the stands crackled with purple and gold. By the end of the first inning, my lap was littered with peanut shells and pretzel salt.

What could be better, other than a Blake Dean home run over the center field wall?

Spring is here. Certainly not because the calendar says so. But because LSU Baseball is back. Be sure to follow the Tigers all season long on Eagle 98.1.

We've been rehearsing a whole slew of new classic rock songs, including some by Badfinger, John Mellencamp, Eddie Money, the Stones, and a great medley of Kinks songs.

Phil Brady's has been a major player in Baton Rouge's Blues and Rock scene for as long as anyone can remember. I'm proud to say this will be the fourth time GEARED UP will have played at Phil Brady's.

Who rocks the Super Bowl?

The stars of the Super Bowl, of course, were our beloved New Orleans Saints. Except at half-time, when The Who took center stage with an amazing display of sound and light.

I didn't particularly care for the abbreviated versions of Pinball Wizard or See Me Feel Me, but I was willing to concede to their inclusion in the program. The rest of the show was pure vintage Who: vibrant, vital, and every bit as rockin' as it was 40 (yes, FORTY) years ago.

As for the light and pyro show, I have 2 words: SPEC TACULAR! And kudos to the producers for NOT having 10,000 young people littering the field in a choreographed display of idiocy.

Roger Daltrey, who turns 66 next month, gave what I thought to be a stellar performance. His voice was clear and strong; perhaps not as powerful as it was 20 years ago, but come on! At 64, his counterpart, Pete Townshend, can still shred as well as anyone.

Zak Starkey sparkled behind his clear drum kit. I absolutely LOVED his new red-white-and-blue "bullseye" cymbals, no doubt a nod to the colorful t-shirt worn by Keith Moon in The Who's mod days in the 60's. Pino Paladino, the newest member of The Who, has had enormous boots to fill since the passing of John Entwistle, but managed to fill in the bottom end nicely. He reminds me of Entwistle, too - tall, quiet, stoic, business-like.

Most people don't realize that The Who have been a 6-man band for quite a while. Rabbit Bundrick has toured with The Who as their keyboardist for over 20 years, while Pete's younger brother, Simon, has added backing guitar and vocals for nearly 10. Both of them add greatly to The Who's sound.

The Who refuse to go away. Thank God.

Weeks ago I maintained that if the Saints could come off their first-round Playoff bye and beat the Cardinals, then they would go all the way and win the Super Bowl. I'm sticking with that. Admittedly, the Saints will have to play the game of their lives without a home field advantage, but I believe they can do it.

I think the key, once again, will be defense and turnovers. Watch.

Both teams have offenses that can put up points almost at will. Therefore, the team whose defense can come up with big takeaways to put their offense back on the field will have the advantage.

And turnovers? The team that keeps the mental mistakes to zero will win this game.

That having been said, what if Indianapolis beats New Orleans? I'll be disappointed, but you know what? That's OK. Because the Saints are in the Super Bowl!

It's no secret that I am a 1973 graduate of Penn State, so it's no surprise that I've been inundated with phone calls and e-mails asking who I'm going to root for in the upcoming bowl game between LSU and Penn State.

While it's true that I owe a great deal to Penn State (which is where I found my livelihood AND my wife!), I don't have to hesitate for a moment when I tell you that my loyalty lies with LSU. My son graduated from LSU, and my wife earned her Master's degree from LSU. In addition, I work for the Flagship Station for LSU Sports. I've been rooting for LSU for so long, I can't root for anyone else, including my Alma Mater.

I'm on or near the LSU campus several times a week, but I couldn't tell you the last time I was in Happy Valley. Come to think of it, the only thing Penn State has done for me in the last 35 years is ask me for more money.

Things to look for in the LSU-Arkansas game:

1) LSU will honor 24 seniors before the game, and many of them played key roles on LSU's 2007 National Championship team. The Tigers will also wear special Nike uniforms for the game, which are mostly white, with "old gold" helmets that have the same design as the regular one.

2) The Tigers must shake off the dissapointment of last week and concentrate on an Arkansas team that has won four straight. Quarterback Ryan Mallett leads the league in total offense. He is a huge (6-7, 240-lbs.) and accurate. LSU hasn't gotten much of a pass rush going this year, and if they let Mallett, who is not mobile, have time to throw, look out.

3) Arkansas spreads the ball around. Four receivers, including the tight end, have 26 catches or more.

4) Razorback tailback Broderick Green is filling in for the injured Michael Smith. Green, a USC transfer, is 6-2, 248-lbs. and quite the power back. Contrary to the image Bobby Petrino and the Hogs portray, the offense is balanced, with 364 passes for the season and 340 runs.

5) The Hog defense has not been good. They are last in the league in total defense, and last in pass defense. However, Mississippi State ran for 347 yards against Arkansas in a loss last week. The Razorback's smallish defense is wearing down, and the pass defense number is largely because the teams that they have blown out had to stop running the football. In the games that were competitve, teams ran the ball successfully at Arkansas.

6) LSU senior tailback Keiland Williams is out with a broken ankle, the third Tiger tailback to be lost for the year. Stevan Ridley will assume the role of starter, with Trindon Holliday and Russell Shepard likely to see more time as well. Seeing Shepard get a bigger amount of playing time would be a welcome sight for most Tiger fans.

7) The winner of this game has the inside track to the Cotton Bowl. The loser seems headed for the Liberty Bowl.
